thank you Jay and Ocean. they fly very well, they are huge but once they get into the air they soar on the thermals. This bird along with a few more, I found sitting and sunning in the tree right by the road. your car is your best mobile bird blind! It was morning and the birds backlit.
Hi Dawn! I once tried playing dead to try and get turkey vultures to come close enough for a good photo. Surprisingly, it didn't work - I guess I just didn't smell bad enough!
Saw a lot of these on lonely backroads in Florida, but they always had the courtesy to waft off before the car got too close. Big wingspan, I'll be some were over 6 ft. (BTW, if you're into raptors (not sure which birds qualify), "Musket" on WC - usually hanging out in the debate forum - is quite an enthusiast,carves them, and has done falconing etc.)
Strange how a bird who appears so heavy and earthbound when perched on a limb can be so graceful when riding the thermals. When I lived in California, I loved seeing them in the sky, even though I knew they were looking for signs of death.

and yes DBM, the TV uses its smell, so you will have to smell dead to get its attention ;) good luck next time?
