This is a winter bird for us. This guy and all his kin will soon go to the mountains to breed and raise young. I wish I had a photo of him in his breeding plumage as it is fantastic.
though to my ears it is not metallic enough, it sounds much to subdued and you cannot tell how far it goes as the sound carries far and wide through the forest.

The one thing I knew we'd miss going to California for the winter was the beautiful Varied Thrush. Haven't seen one since we've been back. Their colors are so bold and lovely. I'm so glad you got to see one and post a pic of it. yay!
thank you Robin, Lee, Jay and Nick. since they are here everyday in the yard you would think I could have taken a better photo but they are wary and like to hang in the shadows. It has been a struggle to get this one almost good photo. Thanks Nick and I knew I liked you for more then your painting!;)

I wish we could hear your varied thrush sing! Glad to know he'll be off to breed and raise more of my favorite singers in the world.

but this plumage is quite lovely in itself. The mottling on the belly is beautiful.
You mean that's NOT his breeding plumage? My he must be a bright little fellow when he's all dressed up!
